You'd want voltage monitoring too, to enable the alternator circuit when voltage drops below some set threshold. Getting stranded just once due to a dead battery wastes the whole effort.

What's that Mazda system with the ultracapacitors? It charges them hard during deceleration. It's a 48V system IIRC. Then it just inverts that down to what the 12V battery needs.

I've thought about a 48V motor/generator in place of the alternator. It could both charge and start the engine and make a good start/stop system too.

Part of "Skyactiv" I thought. I lusted after a Mazda 3 back when that technology came out.
