I'd think they can save far more fuel by concentrating on RR.

In order to keep the contact patch the same, the rim would need to be wider and the tyre would be stretched wider than necessary - that would give it more frontal area than needed - so that extra drag would need to be overcome before any benefit will show.

On 100mm of sidewall and 10°, you're looking at 18mm each side, that's a bit of stretch but I've seen worse on ricers.

I dont think the frontal area would increase that much. Normally the tire is fitted like a donut so its much wider than actual contact patch. Then it just goes back to same width as the contact patch. More wider part would come on the higher proportion so its almost behind the front bumber or front tire spats.

Center of the tire is low rolling resistance compound and outer edges more grippy...

That tire is stretched and is there any other reason for that in speed record car than reduce drag?

finally got my new tires 165 70 13, and all 4 rims the same size. ride is more quiet, and it seems to have more power. my old tires max psi was 36, and these are 44 psi. took a while to convince the tire guy to air them up to 44, but he finally gave in. can"t wait to go through a tank and check the mpg.
