anxious to see

Well I barely failed inspection last week for emissions on my truck at idle. Inspector told me that new plugs will do it cause it was so close to passing. It passed the High speed emissions just not the idle.

Sooo last week I replaced the original coil and the front shocks that were blown out after some fun on the beach and last Friday I replaced the back shocks and added a new set of wires that were badly needed. one terminal on coil to wire connection dumped a bunch of rust when removed cleaned it up.

trying to decide on plugs now should I go with the straight up AC replacements or bump up to a E3 plug or Bosch+4 or maybe the +2. People claim improvements in performance and mpg with the better plugs I guess it is possible. but I am not to sure if it will give me any improvement the cost difference is significant. $1.50 vs. $6.00 x 8 needed

So opinions of Spark plugs in a old V8 with a ton of miles?

come to think of it I should get a new fuel filter also god only knows last time that was changed.

NKG, Autolight, or Champion plugs are fine. Gapped properly they are about as good as you need. Don't bother with any multi electrode plugs as the spark will just take the path of least resistance anyway. I wonder if the claims of improved performance/MPG is from a "better plug" or from replacing a worn out component with a new one. If you are not going with high compression/forced induction the increase in spark will make a negligible change in performance. To get a much better spark you would really need to start back at the coil

I would pull the cap and rotor and inspect for corrosion or burning. If most of the metal is there clean it up with a copper wire brush and reassemble.

Uh-oh, that's one of my hot buttons... Sorry for the rant, but:

Most of the Bosch platinum plugs are crap. The quality is terrible; they have problems with the speck of platinum falling out or bridging the gap completely, and some have had problems with the ceramic insulator breaking inside the chamber. I know a guy who lost a 944 engine that way. (Not cheap!)

The +4 and +2 plugs are the same stupid cheap piece-of-crap plug with three or one extra outer electrodes welded on. Stay away, stay far far far away!

One time I was stumped by a non-running car. I had the car dragged off to my mechanic to see WTF I had done that screwed it up. He replaced the new Bosch Platinum plugs with regular Bosch coppers, and it started right up and ran nicely.

I hate hate hate hate those things. Hate, I tell you!

OK, rant over. I feel better now.

I'd go with standard plugs. Also make sure that the truck is fully warmed up before testing. Get the cat good and hot.
