I was out in the country yesterday, and I recorded some segment fuel consumption data, looking for the relationship between MPG and MPH.
Code:
mpg mph segment length comments
82.2mpg 50mph 17mi lean burn on country roads
69mpg 60-65 6.4mi interstate, as fast as I could go in lean burn
52mpg 74mph 10mi posted speed limit plus nine
I also puttered around at 35mph in lean burn in 5th gear, and I agree, a stock Insight could get >100mpg all day long if you just wanted to go 35mph.
These data were on Blizzak MZ-03 in ambient temperatures around 35°F. They're monodirectional runs, so they're really not great data. I fitted a curve to my three data points, and it's pretty much a line.
I think the right way to make a mph-vs-mpg plot for the Insight would be on a very long, flat country road on a warm, windless day. Change your speed every 2mi, recording speed and segment FE every 2mi. Turn around after about 20mi, and do the same thing in the other direction.
