The tower base was one of the places where contamination remediation caused particular problems. The base was originally dug 120 feet down. After the tower was removed, subsequent occupants of the property used the large hole in the ground for dumping unwanted material, some of it hazardous.

Some say the earth was salted so that they didn't have to dig up the underground half.

When your sponsor (JP Morgan) is making/made his fortune selling electricity (he can cut of if unpaid) and copper wire; running to him shouting: "Eureka! Free Wireless Electricity!" is probably the stupidest stupid thing ever done by a technical genius..!

Now had Tesla NOT considered everyone on earth to be benevolent; that is exactly what HE should have said..!
We'd all be driving around in batteryless electric cars now, rather than fighting the same forces over something as trivial as a lubrication breakthrough.
