Lol my 2011 leaf has a Navi that shows range increases or decreases by turning on or off heating and air conditioning. Nothing new or revolutionary there.

That wasn't one of the reasons they gave. Nor is it a valid reason in my opinion. If the construction materials are too weak, make them beefier.
Actually, one of the main reasons is that because the engine has to be made beefier a diesel motorcycle ends up heavier and less powerful.
So the same may be true of hub motors. They should work if build correctly. Why wouldn't they? If the motor is too flimsy, make it beefier. If it's too heavier, make it lighter. But by making it beefier and lighter at the same time you get a less powerful motor. I'd imagine you could make one powerful enough to move the car down the road and is still strong enough to last a decent life and light enough that it doesn't hurt stability and efficiency too much. But maybe it's impossible to do that and have a Plaid edition hub motor vehicle.

The cables can be routed through an aero enclosed suspension component. A spinning round drive shaft must be located at the center of the wheel, and it will be much harder to enclose in an aero enclosure.
The earlier Aptera had a motor inboard in the nose, and drive shafts, and it took a significant aero "hit". It also lost a lot of space inside the main body of the vehicle.
Everything in a design is a compromise. Moving the motors to inside the wheels saves weight and space - no gearbox or differential, no driveshafts with their CV and u-joints. It makes all wheel drive possible/much easier.
It shifts the Cg downward, and it makes the drivetrain more efficient, all else being equal. It makes torque vectoring possible.
On the downside, it increases the unsprung weight, and it requires that the software function as the differential. It requires that the motor and suspension engineering be able to handle the new/different stresses.

But they're not.
Agreed about the pros and cons. I like the Edison2 inwheel suspension.

How's the air quality down there?
I was in Springfield Thursday and it was quite smokey out. Not so bad a bit further north.

Not good. Maybe not as bad as last year.
I think it's because they are arresting the accelerationists.

I'd rethink my stance on the death penalty if someone intentionally set fire to my frisbee golf course.
