ALDL . . . What am I supposed to do with this?

I recently purchased a 1995 Geo Metro 3 cyl. To my dismay there is no obdII connection in the 95 Geo. So I do a little research and find that I have a ALDL. Does anyone know if its possible to rig up a mpg instrument to the ALDL connection? I'm afraid that the answer is no, but Im new to hypermiling so any information would be great!

I'm not sure what ALDL is, but you could probably hook up an MPGuino.

ALDL = Assembly Line Diagnostic Link , a proprietary on-board diagnostics system used by General Motors before OBD-II was standardized in 1996, mostly 12-pin plug, with some 10-pin and 5-pin variants.

From what I've read I think Scangauge only works with 16-pin OBD-II cars.

However in principle ALDL provides all that is needed for fuel consumption calculation. There is some free software that can display engine rpm and injector pulse width, have a look here:

Looking at the protocol that I could find, you can get speed and fuel flow rate. It shouldn't be trouble for you to write your own 'duino software. It might be easier to merely use the MPGuino software (community supported) and let someone else do the hard work.
