I wish I'd bought a copy of Hot VW Magazine when I was at Edwards AFB.The Rabbit was coming out and the Beetle vanishing.A contributor to HVWM did a beautiful rendering of an aero tricked-out Bug,with all the mods you're talking about. It was ART!

Well I've been through banker boxes full of magazines with more to go. Was it one of their feature artists like Harry Bradley or Tom Daniel?
I did find September 1984. It's easier to hot-link an eBay picture than scan my copy. Asking price on eBay was $15. I wonder if I could sell for Bitcoin.

So that's the 930 Vee kit—slant nose and boxed fenders

This kit, with the whale tail deleted and the wide-body fenders chopped down to closely fit i3 Ecopias would check all the boxes. Except the front fenders run wild abaft the front axle line (they do show how to approach the door-swing).
Glass Action says a repop is coming soon.

feature artists
My poor pitiful memory is telling me that what I saw would be somewhere in between the two renderings. It would have been late '74-early '75.
Sorry that I can't be specific. In hindsight,I should have bought and held on to it.

Well, unless I can turn up another box or two of magazines, we may never know. This dates to 20 years later:

Tonight I made another cardboard and duct tape kamm for the beetle. I have a couple of 300 mile trips to make and 3 days of dry weather ahead. I made it by flashlight, so no good pics till morning.

Here it is. I had some double cardboard from a refrigerator box. The rest of that box is going for another ecomodder purpose
It does not resemble my half model so much, but it does a decent job of simulating the aero of it. I shot some varathane over it today to combat the rain, hoping to keep it on a few days.
I may extend the top kamm panel another 6" or so tomorrow. I have to see what's left of the box first

Did you wrap the corrugated edges with masking tape before the varathane?
Do you have a gauge or something to compare with? Good luck with the trip.

no gauge. Cue the music......
'me, and my eye---ball, strolling round the be-e-tle'
I did not initially shoot varathane, I ran with it for 500+ miles. yesterday the rain was coming so I shot a coat on there with the hopper gun. it seems any transverse masking tape peels so I just shot some into the cells at the trailing edge. I suppose the varathane might stop that peeling.
