Benz Patent-Motorwagen 'range anxiety'
World's first commercial automobile ( Bertha Benz & two sons trip, 1888 ):
* 'Fuel' range, 28-miles/tank ( 45.06-km )
* Fuel: 'ligroin', purchased ay apothecary shops along route ( no 'gas' stations )
* Top Speed: 10-mph ( 16.09-km/h ) 'downhill'
* 'Cooling system range' : 'empty' every 'mile or so' ( 1.6-km ) requiring operator to scoop water from roadside ditches to refill radiator.
* Brake-life ( wood ): less than 62-km, requiring finding a cobbler, to create shoe-leather friction-lining to complete outbound and return legs of journey.
* Uphill driving required 'pushing the car'
* Drive-chain required the capabilities of an along-route blacksmith
* Open crankcase, drip-lubrication system, 'API-SA' SAE 30W oil '
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Internal combustion cars were always 'Perfect'!

Yeah there was no such thing as API or 30 weight oil and the SA rating wouldn't be considered until probably the 1930s.
They were using caster oil as engine and machine oil up through about the 1920s.

We're not allowed to use 'quotes', and there's no provision for 'italics' here at EcoModder, so I tried to 'qualify' my comment best I could.
CAR and DRIVER road tested a recreation of the Patentwagen, and they squirted SAE 30W oil into the open crankcase, as per overseeing Mercedes-Benz support technicians who provided the oil, and accompanied the C&D test drive.
As to the API 'SA' designation, there's no reporting with data any more granular as to early oil types, other than 'SA', which, as mentioned, has carried through into the 1930s.
