You can find nice Civic HX's for 1500 to 2000. Just avoid the automatics (CVT.) If yo go the metro route, watch out for frame rust. You can find Civic VX's for that, but they are very rare. It would likely take months of searching to find a decent one at that price within 100 miles to you.

The Geo metro is simple car that is easy to work on and fairly durable.

I like Honda's but I think the Metro is a better vehicle to learn on.
