I have long wondered the same thing.

I think I remembered that Shell car was built by stock car racers.

I'm not saying they did, but stockcar constructor/racers back then were infamous for cheating, it used to be 'all part of the game' in those days.

I found a link with a few detailed pictures, as someone has been trying to sell it as a historical car
