Diesel Dave's New Diesel

I got a new diesel (don't worry, the truck's not going anywhere).

I was visiting my brother last weekend and he had bought this old traffic sign that had a little diesel genset on it. The engine wouldn't bar over, so he gave it to me. Gotta love free!

It's a single-cylinder 5.9 hp Deutz Ruggerini MD 75 (327 cc):

We tore into it and found some water had run into the cylinder and rusted it up. I cleaned up the rust and got it to turn over free now. In the process, my brother broke the oil ring and I need to get a replacement. Other than that I thing it's good to go. I hope to get it all back together soon.

I'm seriously considering making it into a diesel motorcycle. I've been thinking about it for a while:

5.9hp isn't quite as big as I'd like, but with some work I think it may work for a commuter motorcycle. I have a friend at work that's starting to build one with a 10hp diesel.

We'll see...

I gotta get it running first, that's definitely the first step. After that I'll decide what to do with it. Another option would be to get an alternator and use it as a backup generator. I've been thinking about getting a generator for a while.

I did some digging today and found these specs for the Indian Royal Enfield 325 cc diesel bike:

Top speed of 77 mph & 164 mpg @ 25 mph. Not too shabby.

I worked on it some more this weekend. I got new oil & fuel filters. Also got the new oil ring and got it installed as well. Also made a new dipstick (it was missing one). Here's some more pics.

Here's one with the cylinder head off. Gotta love 19:1 compression:

Here's another with some of the gaurds off:

I should be pretty close to trying to fire it up soon. I got to make some temporary mounts so it'll stay steady. Also need to do a little more makeshift fuel tank plumbing. Then just a little electical work I hope.

That has been a long-time inspiration for me, altough I'd rather get some engine with at least 8hp.

I'd prefer that as well, but I couldn't pass up free. Also, I have some ideas for getting some more power out of it if it comes to that.
