My camping trip is 224 miles one way, 448 miles round trip. My F 150 has a 36 gallon tank which is not enough to make it round trip without refueling. Interestingly enough at 13 mpg one tank would be enough. The 5th wheel we want is in the 8,400 lb range with 1,600 lbs over the rear axle. It might tow pretty well. They have improved them quite a bit.

Closing in on the paint. Have a small amount of resin to apply in the morning and I can start painting on the one panel closest to the camera. Think I can have them painted and back on the truck by Monday. I need to test fit them before paint to make sure I can get the struts bolted in place with the panels on the truck.

panels
It's good timing,as the powers that be are amping up fuel prices.
Why eat when you can feed a gas pump.

Put them back on the truck for a 70 mph test. While we were only pulling 18 to 19 mpg at 70 mph we did a honest 20 plus mpg nat 65 mph. No problems, they look very stable at speed.

Got them primer-ed and painted glossy black. I need to buy two more five inch U Brackets because it turns out I need four spacer blocks on the back struts also. I can wire them in the mean time. I will fabricate and install the back cross braces after I install the panels again. We leave on Friday so this will probably be on Thursday.

I know this is from forever ago but wondered how it turned out?
Thanks, Bill

Heh, I didn't realize until it was pointed out how old this thread was, but just tonight I heard we should expect a 30+ cent price hike for gasoline soon.

Yeah,I'm up in Oklahoma City, and before I left Denton,I topped off the truck, paying 50-cents more per gallon than at the previous fill.
If I had an EV, I'd never have noticed.
The Rivian and Tesla pickups should be interesting for the early adopters.
PS: with only short,local urban commuting,Spirit did 20.6 MPG,compared to 34-HWY.
With an EV truck I'd be able to harvest a bunch of those stoplights and stop signs, rather than lose all that kinetic energy to brake heat.
