Unfortunately it seems to be a global trend, not just restricted to America.

I loved it a few years ago where people were having their kids cholesterol checked.
Folks are getting kinda paranoid with those "healthy" issue. But at a certain point, when people are kinda obsessed about having some disease, it turns into some mental health issue. Over-protective moms should stop freaking out and saying amen to everything they see on TV.

Not pseudoscience, but a measure applied as a quick screening tool for large populations of mostly-sedentary individuals. If you read any remotely-scientific article on it (starting with the Wikipedia one: Body mass index - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) you'll see mention of the fact that athletic individuals will tend to have BMI in the "overweight" range because of increased muscle mass rather than fat.

Jamesqf I have agree with you. At 49 I was mountain biking everyday and considered myself kinda fit. Yet at 6'3" and 240 I was borderline obese by bmi standards. On the plus side, it made me more conscious of my intake as I got older.
