Cruise control hack/modification?

Anybody found a way to modify the parameters for accel/coast on a cruise control? It would be great to devise a +/- 5mph so that hill climbing would gradually decel to your - 5mph setting. Also allowing the car to coast 5mph faster than the setting going downhill...

I just setup a governing block on the cam that pulls the cruise cable. Essentially, it will pull the throttle setting (in my case, a ~12% throttle limit) up to the set speed, and then on hills, modulate the throttle for the set speed as usual. If the limit is hit on a hill or in strong winds, the load-up/slow-down occurs. It overshoots the setpoint a bit on downhills, but not much. It's still good if you need to focus on other things, or are too fatigued to hypermile.

if the cruise is working off the vss maybe you can do some sort of altering on the feed from the vss to the cruise electronics.

The cruise on my car does this now and it is standard.

Set at 95 Kph it will let the engine return to idle on a downhill run and the speed goes up according to gravity assist until that runs out and the speed gradually slow to 95 again and the engine return to drive the car at about 1750 RPM.

The car is a GM variant locally built: Holden Commodore VY sedan , 3.8 with the 4L60E trans.

Pete.
