Caz -NEWGUYNOOB- Questions also to start Ecomodding......

Hey everyone, hope I enjoy it here. Lots of good info on here. Crazy amounts actually.

I currently own a 03 Grand Cherokee, V8 H.O. and it GUZZZZZELS gas, even being gentle and not mashing the accelerator. Using your guys' techniques without even realizing they were called something. Not sure what my actual mileage is. For the sake of argument, it is less than 20mpg, maybe less than 15mpg. My lack of a figure is due to me JUST buying this vehicle (for work), and the gauge being wrong (top dash says 18mpg, but that isn't right based on my mileage divided by gas put in.....).

Anyhow. I suppose this will start a grand questioning, but here is my delinma. I really want to invest in a Volkswagen Golf TDI or something that right of the start I am getting at least 30mpg EPA, then mod er up to 50+ with better driving habits. I suppose my questions are these....

Can I push 30mpg in my current car with mods? I doubt it. Just ballparking...

(Lower her, make easy aero-fixes(roofrack, fogs, grill, mirrors, etc etc), anything else?)

What vehicles should I be looking around at for a CHEAP car that would be a fun time to mod, and has decent aesthetics? It'd be nice to have something along the lines of a Golf, looks decent, has cargo space, and slammed w/ ground effects they look awesome. Just throw out suggestions..

BUDGET: $2000 or less probably.

Thoughts? Glad to be here.

Welcome to the site Caz.

First off, I highly doubt you can get to 30 mpg without massive amounts of mods. The best Cherokee driver's in our garage are getting 22 mpg. Most aren't even breaking 20 mpg, high teens seems normal.

EcoModder Fleet list - EcoModder.com

Second, what is cheap?

I'd say no more than $2000 on craigslist. My cousin and I are very mechanically inclined (more him than me) so it won't be hard to find something worth buying.

Censensus=Obviously do not try to push a 14mpg car to 30+MPG ROFL. Agreed.

That is why I like the Golfs. I love the 08 and newer ones, but definitely not worth it at the price, for me.

Heard the 2015's are suppose to be EPA estimated 65MPG plus Highway. :O

the price given wouldn't be a good start on a tdi, the budget would quickly be blown on repairs

i'm into the mk4's (5speed) which could easily break 60mpg with a hypermiler behind it.
What, no 800 Mile Club??? Members welcome here! - TDIClub Forums

65mpg HW seems a bit high considering the 2014s model mpg Fuel Economy of 2014 Volkswagen Golf
it's probably a stat for the european golf they get better mpg

I actually was looking at a couple of mid eighties 'rabbits' on craigslist, all needed trans and engine repairs though.

I am just looking for something to start Ecomodding on, daily driver to get MUCH better MPG. My cousin has done several cavalier flips, might go that route. Even though he's gonna think I am nuts for wanting to Ecomod for an extra 3-5mpg. Hoping that with some aero mods, and hypermiling I can push it to some decent TDI esk numbers.

i would also consider ford zx2's with a manual, i picked mine for 900 and put roughly 350 into it and has no issues, gets 34mpg unmodded just driving with load no other real hypermiling techniques and IMO it looks good to.

rabbits are nice but the diesels are either gold to people or are junked.

With mods i would expect some hate on the mods from your non eco-minded friends, i take rap on my wheel covers all the time, even though i think they look better than the stock hubcaps or plain steelies.

Will do.

I don't really care what people think of this car. Not even close. I am trying to push my mileage, if they have any problems, its there problem. Do you have any threads on your builds? Or pix?

Thanks for the help bud.
