I didn't realize the transmission was different in those cars. Driving slowly I often catch 3rd gear when shifting to 5th and 4th when shifting to second. So I think my syncros are pretty worn so I was going to have the whole thing gone over and redo the shifter bushings so it may be worth getting a transmission from one of those other cars and having that redone instead. Hmmmm....

Have any of you found if there is a mix and match of gears that could be combined in a rebuild for this generation of civic that overall would maximize FE?

Allegedly the gears can be swapped between the different D-series transmissions with no problems. Possibly even the ring and pinion gears? I'm not sure on that.

Regardless, though, the best FE would come from the tallest gearing, which would be from the 1988-91 CRX HF transmission. That had not only the tallest individual gears, but also the tallest R&P that I know of in a D-series trans.

BTW, getting into the wrong gears has nothing to do with the gears or the synchros. It has to do with the gear shift linkage outside the transmission, or the shift rails and forks inside the transmission.
