Well I had some pretty good success, my omaha to waterloo to chicago to Omaha trip had some pretty good FE #'s.

I take this trip every other month and usually average 38 on the first part, then 40 on the second really flat slightly slower leg, then 35 into chicago back to Iowa, then 38 on the way home.

This time omaha to waterloo was 42, waterloo to dubuque was 50 dubuque to chicago and back to iowa was 40, and back to Omaha was 42 again.

Air dam really helped. I drive the speed limit or 5 over. I don't have the patience to make a 1,000 mile trip at 45-55mph.

So does this mean 65-70mph?

Averaging low 40s at steady-state 65-70 mph cruise in our 1998 DXs is really good. I got 44 once long before modding and hypermiling, but I had to drive 55. You did it at 10-15 mph faster. Nice!

my goal is 65mpg at 65mph. I don't feel like turning my 45 minute daily commute into an hour and 10 minute commute, and I don't feel like turning my 8hr chicago trips into 12 hour trips all for the sake of fuel economy. I don't have time in my life for that.

Totally doable. I average about 60mph on the freeways, pulse and glide with the engine on for most coasts. I commonly get 60-65mpg under reasonably good conditions. For steady state driving I guess you plan a series of mods like the aerocivic? His base was a CX, I think. The CX/VX final drive ratio is far better than our 6th Gen DXs. It has a 3.250. Ours has a 4.058.

You planning wheel skirts and an at least partial undertray? That parachute of a rear bumper/cover assembly is some low-hanging fruit.

65mpg at 65mph in the Civic DX will require a Cd of at least 0.24.

You'll need a boat tail for sure, or a huge semi to draft.

With only a upper grille block I am seeing typically 38 average between 70-75 mph. I make some effort to draft safely behind SUVs, medium duty trucks or semis to bring that up to 43-44 with no AC and windows closed.

And by responsible drafting I try to stay right at 3 middle white divider lines behind the truck in front of me. I would guess about a 1.2 second delay which is about 125 feet at 70 mph. Even that far back it is noticeable.

I am getting more and more inspired by the other Civics on this board. I would love to go crazy with coroplast in the coming months. Hopefully buying a house with a garage soon which will allow me to tinker more. My car is missing a lot of the plastic splash guards up front. Aerodynamically it is very dirty underneath. I agree with BrianAbington, I spend too much time in the car to slow down past where I am so I am enjoying following the progress made.

New 5th gear will happen when clutch replacement happens. Wheel skirts and under tray will come eventually. And I'll move up to 15" wheels with smooth covers in the not to distant future.

A new 5th gear is one thing, but I'm referring to the final driven gear, the ratio of which affects all the gearing at once. You could also just get a different transmission... the HX, VX, or CX transmissions would just bolt on and improve our ratios... I had the opportunity for the final drive gear cheap, so I took it. If I can get a second transmission and tinker, I'll be way-happy.
