Civic HX Buyer's Guide?

So, I've decided to buy an SUV for my wife who has a shorter commute that can take over for towing duties so I no longer need my truck. So, I'm now in the market for an efficient commuter. I've settled on the Civic HX as my car of choice.

My budget is rather modest, and many of the cars are not in pristine condition, but that doesn't bother me much. What does concern me is that the engine is in good shape and will get the good mileage I expect from an HX.

So, the question: What is the easiest way to determine if the engine will run in lean burn mode? Are there any other HX specific things I need to watch for when trying to find one of these cars?

Thanks,

Well, no response yet, so maybe a specific question would help.

Most of the low priced HXs that I'm finding have a header and aftermarket exhaust. I'm indifferent on this as long as it's not reducing fuel economy. Will modified exhaust by itself affect an HX's ability to lean burn?
