Since the mat is only used on the inside,it doesn't show.It's typically less expensive than cloth and can be used to thicken (stiffen) sections.
Strips of cloth or mat 'tape' can also be used for reinforcement.
Paper tubes,and half-tubes can also be used for stiffeners as well.One of my powerboat hulls was constructed this way.
Also,when doing cloth layups,if you rotate the weave of the second later 45-degrees from the first,you'll gain tensile strength in more directions than if you duplicate the first layers orientation.

Oh wow... I read that backwards... I have a lot of cloth and not a lot of mat. Because that made sense to me. I read it backwards last time thinking that they wanted the mat for the outside. Didn't make sense to me.
