Coaxial Helicopter

PDX traffic sucks just about all the time. From about 6am to 7pm or later, the freeways are jammed with cars that barely move.

I often joke saying that I will buy a helicopter to avoid the mess. I'm not really serious about getting a chopper, but today I Googled "cheapest personal helicopter" and found this; the Afalina.

There doesn't seem to be a working prototype yet, but it's a 2-seater coaxial helicopter. From the website:

Is the tail even necessary when there is no rotor attached to it? Are coaxials fuel efficient? I'm assuming there is no swash plate, and therefore no way to auto-rotate if the engine fails. Is climb controlled by head RPM and therefore engine RPM?

I have lots of questions and don't know much about helicopters. If I could get into helicopters for $120k plus certification, maybe it's in my distant future.

If you don't need the 2nd seat, there's the Mosquito personal helicopter (also available as an ultralight), which has been flying for a number of years, is less than half the cost of the Afalina, and has a dealer network established.

I was looking at the Mosquito, but eventually I would want the 2nd seat. Adventuring is best done with a partner.

Maybe I should stick to planes. I just like the idea of not needing an airstrip, and being able to land in tighter places.

If you join a flying club you can hire aircraft at fairly cheap rates. Probably cost you less than hanger fees and airworthiness inspections etc.

Hanger fees. Airworthiness inspections. You must not know me

If I end up flying, I'll want to commute with the thing. That means I'll be going from my house to my parent's, or to friends houses, or who knows where. Mostly I just want to avoid PDX traffic.
