Coefficient of Municipal Drag ( Cdm )
From:
Texas Department of Transportation, news, January 5, 1993, 'Synchronized lights save Texans money and time', Carlos Lopez, Special Projects Engineer, 512 / 416-3135, 125East 11th Street, Austin, Texas 78701-2483
Re: Traffic Light Synchronization ( TLS ) Program.
1) the average traffic light created 757,913.5 traffic stops / year
2) at 19,170.75-hours lost / signal light
3) wasting 13,374.94-gallons gasoline / traffic light
4) at a cost of $216,228.26 / traffic light
5) or, $ 0.285 / stop, every 42-seconds, 24- hours / day, 7-days a week, for 365-days / year
6) producing 591,000,000- pounds of carbon-dioxide / traffic light
or, 295,500-tons
7) The US Council of Governors would all have access to this data
8) All traffic engineers would have access
9) All mayors and city managers would have access
10) All of those who issue building permits would have access
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Should each citizen have experienced one unnecessary traffic stop per day, their direct and indirect losses would have exceeded the cost of the $ 3-trillion infrastructure program recently considered in the US Congress ( $ 0.284 / capita / 10-years ), as we're talking about 1993-Dollars, not yet adjusted for inflation )
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* In the intervening years since the 1993 study, we've experienced an additional 8,274,000 -tons extra carbon dioxide / traffic light.
* And a $ 62 loss for every $1 not spent on synchronization ( $ 3,522 / signal ).
* And why your potentially-36-mpg- CITY full-size pickup only gets 18- mpg.
* Cdm is a hard thing to 'streamline' against.

Eugene, OR, is on the bleeding edge:
www.traffictechnologytoday.com/: Connected Signals launches cloud-based V2I traffic light priority system
Quote:
Oregon-based provider of predictive real-time traffic signal information Connected Signals has developed a proprietary cloud-based vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technology that offers priority to transit and emergency vehicles.
....
Connected Signals’ SPS is software-extensible, so private and public vehicles running the application, such as EMS vehicles and snowplows, can be given enhanced priority to help municipalities maximize throughput in ways that are currently impossible. SPS can also provide vehicle operators with speed recommendations and other information to directly manage traffic flow. Cities can also use the SPS technology for general traffic management applications or to target specific objectives that could include diminishing transit vehicle delays, optimizing traffic flow, and reducing carbon emissions. The technology can also be deployed to assist pedestrians and cyclists.
Connected Signals partners with transportation agencies to aggregate real-time traffic signal data using existing infrastructure, without the expensive equipment required by many other solutions. The SPS technology uses the company’s V2If (V2I for Free) device that connects traffic signal controllers with the outside world through an encrypted signal.
|
The original pitch was to reduce transit times for cross-town traffic. Now they promote buses and snowplow integration.
This company has presence on social media but no direct contact phone number. Maybe the next time I'm near County Club Road I can stop by their office. I want to know if they partner with Arcimoto.

Eugene, Oregon
Sounds like they're as far along as Denton, Texas. A real red-light district.
Street-corner bandits.

That sounds like the opposite to providing a window into the timing of the lights. The original pitch was route planning with realtime input. Accommodating the needs of the entity providing the data is a new consideration.
If you buy into that smart phone cr*p, you could watch the lights changing in Eugene from Denton.

It's lipstick on a pig, glossing over a designed-in, structural deficiency of the physical infrastructure.
Municipalities cannot live within their means. Without 'growing the economy', and the revenue it brings, they go under.
Any and all business activity is encouraged, while shorting traffic engineers and civil engineers.
Contractors end up connecting arteries and veins, making merging without stops impossible, 'through-put' becomes technically impossible.
Entropy builds. Gridlock.
The municipality continues to issue building permits, inviting more traffic onto infrastructure already 'saturated.' More gridlock.
As traffic overwhelms the city, it continues to metastasize.
The city re-zones, allowing even higher population density, developers over-overwhelm the infrastructure.
If you'll examine the portfolios for the city, county, state, and teacher retirement pension funds, you'll notice that they are direct beneficiaries of every activity which is directly driving the increased congestion, wasted man-hours, pollution, climate-change, you-name-it.
By all other metrics, this would qualify as insider trading, malfeasance, and conspiracy, as they directly profit from all waste they generate by growth, something which cannot exist without a greenlighting at all government levels.
An inside job. 'Rule of law'- protected.
I had to pay Texas for some of the data. Some was sent on request. And today, you might have to file an open records request, freedom of information act-esque procedure, in order to get the data.
Since all governors, mayors, etc. network, nationwide, I would presume that they all play the same game. Patron - client privilege, dating to the Roman Empire, perhaps Sumer. Darkly fascinating.

Else it's overcoming that structural deficiency without requiring additional hardware, using the pocket panopticon that urbanization ultimately enabled.

In Texas, it couldn't possibly make any difference, due simply to left turns ( banned in New Jersey ).
It's impossible to time cross-traffic as long as left turns are permitted. And you can't 'cloverleaf' the intersections because the city employees at the building permit office let commercial and residential developers build where all the cloverleafs might have gone, making it structurally impossible to fix unless you did eminent domain, bulldozing, and reconstruction, at taxpayer expense.

'Cloverleaf' are four-petaled. Roundabout.
Here's what happens when government is given a free hand. You've likely never heard of www.glenwoodoregon.com/. Its an interesting place "Secret gardens among trailers and tire shops". The population is 1,300 and they have five traffic circles!
New Franklin Boulevard
It's the two on the left that kill alarm me.
What could possibly be the purpose of the one to the East? Circle 8 races?
Also the area between the traffic circle and the river was the central location that should have been the location of the new hospital. Instead of putting it in the middle of nowhere (access-wise) they put it in the far corner of nowhere.
