Is this the same one from five years ago with a rear engine RWD concept, then revamped to be FWD and front engined?

I understand that the Up! started as a Skoda concept but VW decided they wanted it for themselves. The Scirocco also started as a Skoda, and I think the Lupo was originally a SEAT concept.

EDIT - SEAT and Skoda versions too

Seat

Skoda

Yes - it'll hit the EU showrooms shortly.

The rear-engine / rear-drive layout was too expensive to produce.
And likely a bit alien for the current lowest-segment buyer, many of which have never driven a rear-drive car - or any car at all, as VW is actively targeting first-car buyers with the up!.

Repacking the engine in a front motor compartment apparently was an engineering feat on it's own.
There's extremely little space in the up!'s nose.
