the little nissan 6. my uncle had one in a 40 foot lobster boat. Is id funny what people do with diesel, even call them gutless.

the first datsun (top video) is setup correct. the bottom one is missing advance (oem retarded).. a little boost would go a loong way in the little car.

I pondered diesel in a 3 main boxer. I went though a spell of wrong fuel, and it burned it. even took on the rattling valvetrain of diesel. As if 137 ft pounds sucking through a straw at 45mpg on 87 octane wasn't amazing... waht would the true balanced engine do with diesel. ... cross the line of unbelievable and get killed? that would be just like the 3 main boxer on gas.

I hate to break it to you, but an I6 is a truly balanced engine as well.

I found a video of an Opel Speedster that someone converted to diesel.

Here are the specs:

0-62 mph in 5.9 seconds
137 mph top speed
41.2 mpg fuel economy
2.2L 4 cylinder turbodiesel from an Opel Vectra
160 horsepower
235 lb-ft torque
2082 lbs weight
0.38 drag coefficient
16.8 sq ft frontal area
49,000 Euro price tag

It doesn't perform nearly as admirably as the Eco speedster concept, which demonstrates just how much weight, rolling resistance, aerodynamics, gearing, and reduction of engine displacement can all add up in improving fuel economy. As it is though, the above car in the video is still quite nice!

I wonder how an aeromodded Triumph Spitfire would do with an OM603 MB diesel with a Myna performance kit and modified gearing... *drool*

I just can't get the idea of an 80+ mpg, 0-60 mph < 4 second, 200+ mph capable eco car out of my head. It's definately possible.

The Corvette conversion still hangs out there.

It has a lot of things going for it. First and foremost there are a lot of salvage title ‘Vettes that can be had for reasonable money. These are body-on-frame cars and the frame has to be really badly bent to preclude repair. Also by saving a ‘Vette from the Pick-A-Part, you have done the equivalent of saving a sick Tennessee Coon Hound from the pound. ‘Vette have big engine compartments and a divorced transmission setup (on C5 and C6 cars) and that gives you a lot of choices of engines. The T-56 transmission has an awesome overdrive ratio.

They are relatively light, streamlined cars (compared to sedans and pickups at any rate) and should give outstanding results. Yeah, there are aero improvements that can be made and no doubt you could lighten it somewhat. The 18 and 19 inch wheels might be a problem finding really low RR tire for. There are scads of aftermarket parts for ‘Vettes that could help out such a project.

A boxer on diesel would be like dividing by zero, from the perspective of efficiency/performance.

Um, be careful what you search for. I searched, and with an .info at the end of davidsfarm, I get a site with animal mutilation.

Edited accordingly. Thanks for that information, though.

The search should actually be done on YouTube, but Google ownz U-Toob now, so I just left it there like that.

Ironic... I just looked at that website you mentioned... It's a forum against Dave from "davidsfarm"... that's the same guy that put a VW TDI into a Caravan, and those are the videos I intended for the searcher to find. I won't get into the issues that forum touches on, nor the legal implications drawn from them, as they're not to be discussed here. Make your own inferences.
