Ummm... didn't see much science in that Laguna piece as far as geometry. Shows one way to build 'em though.
The Fusion is not really a trunk lid extension; they've raised the entire lid from the base of the backlight on back.

Are you sure they raised the trunk? I think the side-spat starts where the trunk "meets" the window and stays the same height. Because the trunk slopes down, the side spats end up being like a quasi-fin. Here's a photo gallery :

Here's a picture from the Hi-res mode :
Hmmmmm, I guess the trunk could be raised maybe an inch or more. Is that what you mean?

It looked to me like the whole trunk surface was levelled out and raised at the rear.
It's kinda tough to "look through" those end plates.
I might have been wrong on that? In spite of your much better pics I'm not 100% sure now.

I think we're both right. Now I want to go to a Ford lot and look at a Fusion trunk without being hassled.

I added a flat spoiler to create a "virtual" 13 degree slope.

The flow over the deck lid looks much smoother w/ the extension, but it looks like that really screws up the wake behind the tail lights, making a huge vortex that, at least intuitively, is going to create an even worse vacuum than the original wake would? (Yea, that's a question.)
Either way, I'm not getting the car... guy thinks he's got a gold mine. Literally, he wanted my quad and $550...

When I looked at the pic, I wanted to make sure to pay close attention to the gentle slope of the roof line, which appears to be training airflow in a downward arc toward the deck lid.
While I don't think it's TOO bad, I do believe that rear window adds significant wake area, somewhat comparable to that which is created at the rear of the car's deck lid.
I think "fixing" the flow there at the window area could lessen the rear drag by at least 30%. No expert, so input is necessary here. (Phil?!?)

Yeah, I'd say definitely a rear spoiler.Ford has the roof falling off as it moves rearward and then I think we'd all agree that she separates at the backlight header, then may re-attach.Don't know.I do know that the angle between the rear edge of the trunklid and backlight is steeper than what Dr.Kamm would accept. He advocated no more than 10-degrees.You could probably cheat a little, say 12-13.
I'd do like CAR and DRIVER on the Pinto and Z-Car.Angle the spoiler up to the rear at 30-degrees and take it as high as you can live with.In a perfect world.the spoiler would reach up until it intersected the imaginary line of the Kamm or Jaray roofline which is what the template is all about.
Also, the straight-back foil,as on the Fusion is good,it just has to go way back before it intersects the 10-12 degree line.
Oh,by the way,999 was the number of Ford's first race winner.I think Barney Oldfield drove it to victory. That's why they used it on the Fusion.
