In the end, every consideration is one of effort. It can cost money to replace dashboards that are destroyed by sun and heat, or it can cost money to replace worn out window actuators. Money = work = effort. Also, putting up sun shades or cracking the window is effort.
Abstractly, having to run the AC for a longer duration due to heat will cost more money, which takes effort to make. But then again, buying a sun shade takes effort as well.
Heck, even global warming is an argument about effort. Does it take more effort now to reduce the negative consequences of global warming, or would it take more effort later to mitigate those consequences (rhetorical question)?

If its over 70F outside I crack my windows 1" or more, unless rain is falling. Common sense.

I live in Texas. It's going up over 100 today, like it did yesterday. My windows are cracked an inch. My sunshade is up, car parked to face the afternoon sun.
When I approach the car, I walk around and open all the doors and the hatch. Get in, key on, roll down windows, key off. Get out again, walk around and close the doors. THEN I get back in and buckle up, take down the heat shield, put on glasses, etc.

^That. Even when I'm a passenger getting into a hot car I leave the door wide open until the driver is all situated and ready to start up.

It took more effort to type that out than it does to crack a window open a bit.

Ok, I misunderstood the ECU location. Most of the work I've done has been on larger vehicles (trucks, etc.) and by ECU I thought you meant the Engine Control Unit (aka ECM) not the Electronic Control Unit (what I'm used to referring to as a "body computer").
I understand now.

I do the pretty much the same.
Curious - you say you 1) get in 2) key on 3) roll down windows , key off.
Key on ?

Power windows. Turn on / Boot up the car, but certainly don't start the engine until I'm ready to roll.
