Cross country lowest fuel consumption Guiness record

https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com...ast-hybrid-car

"The lowest fuel consumption driving across the USA from coast to coast (hybrid car) is 3.06 litres per 100 kilometres (76.551 miles per gallon) and was achieved by Wayne Gerdes (USA) in a 2017 Kia Niro, as certified in New York, New York, USA, on 11 December 2016.

Wayne Gerdes departed in the 2017 Kia Niro from Los Angeles City Hall on 4 December 2016 and arrived at New York City Hall on 11 December 2016."

The Kia Niro is rated at 52 city/ 49 highway. Wayne is known for these corporate pr records to drive publicity for the company. If you've never heard of this model of car before it's probably why the company decided to sponsor this.

This seems like an easy enough record to beat. Any takers?

Edit: A similar record for reference

The lowest fuel consumption driving to 48 contiguous US states in a hybrid car is 3.16 litres per 100 km (74.34 US mpg, 89.28 UK mpg) and was achieved by Kyle Morris and Connor Morris (both USA), driving a stock 2006 Honda Insight, between 15 and 27 June 2013.

What are the minimum speed requirements? I can get close to 100 mpg going from Michigan to Virginia if I keep the speeds between 45 and 60 mph, excluding downhill. An Insight should be able to do better than 70 mpg--pretty sure Wayne himself was able to regularly get in excess of 100 mpg in them way back when.

Not sure but the record says he did it in 7 days which is a pretty leisurely pace to cross the country

I could probably beat the record in theory. The Ioniq is the exact same hybrid power train as the niro. The niro is literally an Ioniq with a compact suv frame on top of it. It only gets less mpg than the Ioniq because it’s heavier and less aero. So if a niro can do that. An Ioniq can do it better due ti lower drag. The guy probably did it in a niro because it’s more comfortable. A lot of older or heavy set people complain about the Ioniq being uncomfortable because it’s lower to the ground, the seats have no lumbar support, and the inside space is a little tighter.
