I used a mechanical fan switch to control a cooling fan for several years (Autozone?). I found that I needed to put the sensing bulb INSIDE the top rad hose near the thermostat to get sensitive switching...using it outside the rad didn't work.

Just used some non-hardening gasket goop where the fine tube went under the top hose and clamped down over it.

The switch I used didn't need a relay...it could handle the amps used by a 1.5 L engine fan.

Also used an indicator light inside.
