On my first car (a 77 Cutlass) the dash lights failed one day and I just couldn't find the root cause in my early years of troubleshooting. It was no big deal until I couldn't tell how fast I was going at night and had to keep turning on the dome light to check. The solution was to buy a small bulb, mount it outside of the speedo pod, and wired it into the cruise control on/off switch (which didn't work anyway). It was a cool little light with that green "office lamp" glass on the back.
I often thought that this would be an easy LED setup on vehicle setups with a minimalist bulb philosophy (if you can minimize glare off of the panel cover and to shield direct bulb view to the driver).
