Having more low end torque may or may not improve things. All else being equal, if you increase available torque at a given RPM, your driving load will be lower. Lower load means more vacuum, and more losses. Hopefully the increased power comes in part from efficiency improvements and not just from getting more air into the cylinders.

However, if it can help prevent a downshift, or allow shifting earlier, that's something.

Check those suppliers you’ve linked to and see if they have an “RV” cam for your engine... closest you’ll find to an economy grind... you need to move the torque peak lower in the RPM range

Are you referring to pumping losses? Can you elaborate more on that?

What does RV stand for? I'll be sure to take a look.

In my specific situation a higher gear ratio won't help me. The 4.0 is most efficient from like 2200-2600 rpm. I would like to keep highway cruising within that range. Plus I am getting larger tires for off roading so I would like to get lower gears for that... Maybe 4.56:1.

Some people might think my goals are complete opposites but I just want the best of both worlds!

Been 20 years but: rv cams have longer intake duration, but not that much as a "race" cam. Also some more overlap between intake & exhaust open events. Additional gains can be had retarding cam timing by as much as 8 degrees
