Traditional motorcycles are about the most inefficient aero shape possible !

Sure, but I'd still rather get a traditional motorcycle because I like them. Unless I were considering to make a recumbent one focused specifically on the fuel-efficiency, then I'd make the sacrifice for the sake of aerodynamics.

I remember back in the early 80's when I was road racing motorcycles. Hardly any bikes had more than a headlight cover. When the Yamaha RZ350 was introduced it became apparent that they were more efficient and drafting them was much more difficult. I really don't like the trend in current motorcycle fairings with lots of sharp corners on them. I would guess that they penetrate the air better than my old 2 stroke but the shapes are not intuitive.
I still have my old rz350. Runs great.

Huh. That would be some huge sacrifice from my side. I'm afraid I'd be scared ****less on a recumbent motorcycle I don't really feel in control when I ride a very normal cruiser instead of my... whatever an F650CS is

Actually my favorite motorcycles are the off-road ones for their light weight and maneuverability in tight spaces.

Over here in NL there is a company building Diesel bikes using a CDI from the Smart road car. It's called Track motorcycles, the Track T-800CDI
Difficult times atm, but they have produced a number, even exporting to the US, Canada etc.
