Do you smell a scam?

If you have ever looked up getting better MPG I'm sure you have seen these things, do you think they are a scam? Supposedly you stick them in your intake & they spin the air & that will for some reason give you better MPG. Some of the testimonies on these things report +1MPG, +4 MPG, +40% MPG exc. I think its bull, but for $30 it would be worth it if they did work...http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...1&d=1243580607 http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...1&d=1243580607 http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...1&d=1243580607 http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...1&d=1243580607

Typing "tornado" into the search box might be enlightening

A block of wood under the gas pedal would give about the same results - permanent restriction. If you want that, the extra mixing from this rig might be worth a couple of bucks in improved mileage.

Bob- extra mixing? improved mileage? Seriously???

Smokey Yunick was a strong proponent of aids to evaporation of the fuel, so this gadget might help that way. Especially if it was downstream from a dirty injector. However, I wouldn't take the time to install one even if my dad gave it to me.

Frank Lee 05-29-2009 05:13 AM

That is true. His was basically a turbo wasn't it? With no intercooler and running real hot?

If I'm not mistaken these tornados and whatnot install AHEAD of the throttle body and ahead of any fuel. The throttle plate will mess up whatever it is they are purported to do anyway.

Bicycle Bob 05-29-2009 05:19 AM

Yeah, Smokey's intake temp was getting up to 450 F, AFAIR. No carb icing on his rig. :-)

Gosh, the old J.C. Whitney "turbo" spinners were supposed to go between the carb and manifold. Maybe the suckers are even dumber now.

Tornado Air Management Systems :: Measurement Guide

Yup- ahead of everything.

markweatherill 05-29-2009 08:19 AM

My question would be: clockwise or anti-clockwise, which is better?

Put any one of these gadgets in Google and look 2 or 3 pages in.
You will find lawsuits and false advertising litigation abounds.
All of these type of "Fuel Atomizers" have been tested by the EPA and found to do nothing at best and waste fuel while restricting your air flow at worst.
