Dog loves eating staghorn sumac, is this poisonous to a dog

I have long heard poison sumac was harmless to pets but what about the edible ones?

My dog always wants to break green branches off the wild staghorn and smooth sumacs this time of year and appears to chew it up with more joy than a rawhide.

I have heard people allergic to cashew shouldn’t eat sumac and my dog is definitely sensitive to cashews. (Though he thinks he can eat a bag of them too)

All the usual reading material is focused on dogs being immune to all the poisonous plants like ivy poison oak etc, not the regular sumac

My chihuahua mix eats the bark off a fallen staghorn sumac at least once a day, and has shown no ill effects. The flowers of the tree are edible (for people) and contain lots of vitamin C.

My dog absolutely loves the berries from a bush outside.
I knew that dogs will sometimes eat grass for digestion.

It's like natures' wisdom.

BUT THEN just being curious, I looked up the berries.
They are toxic to dogs !

So here I was thinking that my dog knew best, and animals have this sixth sense or something, and I was totally wrong !

If i had not stopped her, she would have killed herself !

It's like overeating. I found out that dogs will eat themselves to death if there is enough food around.
My dog got into the bag of food while i was away, and bloated up.
Lucky for me, i csme home in time to take it from her.

So whst am I saying ? Well, dogs aren't the brightest animaks apparently, so when in doubt, better to not let them eat something you think may be bad for them.

Off on a tangent here : a friend of mine is a vet tech and they had to pull a foreign object from a dogs' intestine that was blocking it.
It turned out the blockage was a pair of panties.

The panties were not the wifes'.

My first ex-wife* had a Samoyed and some left-over salmon**. It refused it for a day or so but when she didn't feed anything else it eventually did. It expired in the back seat of a VW Beetle on the way to Animal Services.

Poison sumac is poisonous to most of us because of the urishio oil.

I didn't even know there was more than one variety of sumac. Well, I only knew sumac for its usage as the main ingredient of zaatar.
