Don't forget the basics of ecomodding

I've been beside myself trying to sort why my economy has taken a nosedive recently, and mainly busied myself checking out things under the hood and fussing at my wife for having a lead foot.

Lately we've been using the current mpg scanguage, which will show the average for a trip. I'd been managing to improve it each day on the trip to and from work, but I was missing that elusive 30 mpg goal in the Maxima. On a hunch I decided to check the tire pressure and discovered I had less than 30 psi in the fronts! I brought them all up to about 45 psi and what a difference that made!

It's amazing how the simple things will slip on by the radar!

I agree, the basics are one of the most important things to do. I can say that most of my results are from A) the nut behind the wheel, and B) just maintaining my truck. Keeping the engine tuned/repaired and the whole truck in good condition helps

When my wheel bearing went out, I could actually tell something was up on the scangauge. I just COULDN'T get the same instants I usually could, and not a few%, but a major (2~3 mpg) decrese.

Got it fixed, and she rolls like she's on ice. (:

My mom always thought me a bit odd for tracking my economy, but as you all have said, when a car starts to have problems, the economy is generally affected first. So tracking the economy is like balancing the checkbook in my mind, best done often instead of waiting for problems to occur and checks to bounce.
