Ed, to answer you original question; the existing spoiler lip you have does not look that high in the photos. I would still go with what the guys are suggesting, and which I've drawn out.

However, what you first proposed is what I too once proposed on a Chevy S-10 Blazer. It was a half hearted proposal, more of a question than anything else. You should look at it, just to solidify the path we have now directed you to, so that you don't have to look back and second guess yourself.

spare tire holders

I've seen swing-away spare tire holders on some SUVs which allow complete use of the rear hatch/tailgate.
With something like that, you could fabricate an extension which would really show at the gas pump 'n no loss of utility.

Here's the cheapest pickup hitch receiver tire mount I've found thus far. The combination bumper and swing-away gets to four figures in a hurry.

Can probably have a local guy weld something up for a fair price.

I was just going to say that could be fabricated to fit relatively easily. If you could get someone to make a big hinged X on the back you could attach the edges of the Kammback to the ends of the crossbeams. It could be pretty small diameter steel too. The only problem would be attaching it at the top because hitches tend to wiggle around a bit.

I have seen a drift Nissan S13 which held the hatch down with an elastic strap and a hook. It wasn't the prettiest thing but it was cheap and effective.

If I had numbers I could fab up something very reasonably.
