Home Energy Report

My local power company (actually, power and gas) has a program to create these "Home Energy Reports" that compare your usage to other similar homes nearby. Does anyone else get these?

It's been around for a few years, but not everyone gets them. I just received my first.

(trimmed to show only relevant bits)

I wouldn't say I've done anything too serious to really improve my energy consumption (I do have a high efficiency furnace though, and CFL or LED lights throughout) so I was surprised to see I was in the top 12%, and top 8% over the winter months. I suspect that variation is primarily due to the furnace.

That is a cool feature. I like how it ranks you.

My utility has something similar. It doesn't rank you, it just compares you to the average of local homes (no idea what local is though). This is what I get:

They have a little more in-depth info on their website, plus tips and ideas to reduce your energy usage.

One interesting thing is that my average gas consumption is higher than average during the summer months compared to my neighbors. I presume this means most people around here have electric water heaters, since my electrical consumption is about half of average.

Wish our local utility offered similar information.

This looks like a contest! Any time someone places a ranking on something, I feel the need to compete.

It's a smart idea to get consumers to take notice of their consumption. I'll have to see if my utilities offer any sort of ranking info.

Ours will give you an energy audit, but the bill just shows your usage from the last year.

PG&E does this for NorCal. I can't say where I sit in my area, but I do have to deal with these 'rankings' just about every day. Asking customers what their energy bill is and being told it's low and they get the letter saying their one of the most efficient can get annoying. My thought is 'yeah that's nice, but what is your bill?'. I like the recognition of good work, but that doesn't mean your work is done.

Yeah, mine has this as well. They go through a somewhat in depth questionaire on your appliances and how you use them. Then, they give pertinent tips based on your usage. Its actually pretty good.

I do find it really sad that I'm THAT low compared to the average. My house was built in the late 1800s, and it is not energy efficient at all. I've done my best with CFLs, low flow showerheads, etc., and I am remodeling to air seal and add insulation (full 2nd story has none), yet I'm still THAT low compared to the average? Yikes...
