I've noticed all my junk rusts out worse on the driver's side.

Same here (junk rust).. but this is such an extreme example (giant hole vs. no rust on the other side), it sure seems like it must be a defect.
This thread needs more junk jokes.

Nothing fancy: sheet aluminum riveted in place, with lots of fibreglass infused roofing tar for sealer.
Next up: anti-rust spray and front air dam.

Kinda makes sense. The driver's side is exposed to a lot more spray from oncoming traffic. Also, I don't know how it is where you live, but here, most of the salt is near the centre line of the road (I guess as it melts the snow/ice, it will run down to each side of the road due to the crown).
