How well did this end up working? I have been thinking about taking off my power steering, but I have hydroboost.

Based on your results, do you think a similar system would be worth (in terms of fuel savings) hooking up to the hydro boost on my Astro? Opinions are appreciated.

I haven't been able to do much with it at all.
All I did so far was test it and found that it works really well.

1989 firebird mostly stock. Aside from the 6-speed manual trans, corvette gen 5 front brakes, 1LE drive shaft, 4th Gen disc brake fbody rear end.
2011 leaf SL, white, portable 240v CHAdeMO, trailer hitch, new batt as of 2014.

The oems are continuing to use hydraulic power steering with worm gear box in hard working applications.

Have you considered using something OEM like an A class power steering pump. It runs off 12v. I've thought about using one, and having it only turn on when the steering wheel is not directly straight up (using a reed switch and a magnet on the steering wheel).

Got a Citroën/Peugeot electric pump for my Citroën. 3 wires to hook up (power, ground, and a switching wire to the relay mounted on the pump, heavy fuse is included). Later models have more electronics, to make it speed-variable. I suppose you could make it user-adjustable and/or turn off at the dash.

On the upside, unlike the belt driven power steering on my other car, this one seems to freely let the oil flow forward when the pump is not running, steering just reverts to manual heavyness, instead of nearly-locked-solid like the mechanical pump.

You got a link or part number or what year/model citroen these pumps are on. Sounds ideal

With various different reservoir shapes, power connectors and with/without built in speed related electronics, in almost any Citroën car from 2000 on, several Peugeot models too. Some models could have either electric or belt driven depending on what other options the car had, I don't really know if theres a whole list, but googling "Citroën electric power steering pump" will give plenty of results.

I'd say the Saxo/106 one is probably the most easiest to adapt, it has a remote mount reservoir (really just a fill cap on a hose, the pump also has internal capacity) so you can bury it somewhere down low in the engine bay, simple wiring (the wires come out with a connector that you can replace if needed), and if you get the whole thing with mounting bracket and it's little wiring loom it's even easier to make work.
