The main problem with putting electrical goodies inside there is heat. That's why in the Magneti-Morelli design above the generator is outside of the heat-flow.

Any sort of barrier including spinning wheels can reduce the noise from the engine - including turbochargers. But there's space there to add more energy capturing wheels for electrical generation imo.

In car manufacturing, it's all about cost. So not every fancy thing goes into the models. Usually, if some idea, like an alternator works, and works reliably and can be purchased in volume for low cost, that's what's going to go into the vehicle from the factory.

Anything a bit dicky, with the chance of needing < 50,000 miles servicing, well that can stay out.

2003 Renault Scenic - 30% more power with no loss in fuel economy.
1991 Toyota GT4 - more economical before ST215W engine-swap.
previous: Water-Injected Mitsubishi ~33% improved.
future - probably a Prius

As is a cathedral, until the pipe organ starts up.
