There will be some income from North Sea Oil and Gas as workers get paid and their pay gets taxed. The oil companies get the revenue from the sale of the oil, and pay the UK government for the licences and tax. Scotland gets revenue from rates gathered from facilities on Scottish soil, just as any business pays. Even Amazon has to pay rates on their warehouses!

On earnings of £25.000/$33,000 we pay 11% tax, more or less the same as you would pay on that amount in the US.
Wikis figures for GDP is about 30% higher than the official government figures.

So it's not actually free, is it? At best, someone else has to pay for what you're getting.

Everyone gets free prescriptions, the elderly get free bus travel (I paid taxes for 42 years before I qualified), the youngsters get free university education, children get free school meals in years 1 through 3. We all pay in while we are working and the money is divided out where it makes the biggest difference. Nothing wrong with that.

What do you get from your taxes?

The USofA had a half-purebred Scot for President for two terms, yet none of that benefit accrued to us. Maybe it's something in the water over there?

You can complain about taxes.
You can complain about government.
But in the end all government activities are paid for by taxes. You get what you paid for!

I'm against agism, sexism, anythingism when it comes to government interference. If a rule/benefit applies, it needs to apply to everyone.

I don't know what I get from my taxes, but I do know I get the DMV threatening to take my license away for paying the registration tax, but not driving the vehicle.

I suppose I get military representation in the far corners of the world, not that I wish my money to be spent in that way. The upside is I also get GPS with my taxes. You're welcome rest of the world.

But encouraging old people to stop driving does benefit everyone.

Maybe where you are. Here the country runs on duties and tariffs, and the taxes are funneled straight to the Federal Reserve to service that debt.

I ride the local bus for free, but that's a service of the county/city.

OTOH I think transit should be free at point of use for everyone. Little else will get people out of their cars. Employees get the low rate covered by their employer, un/self-employed get an exorbitant high rate.
