Maybe the government will auction them off so they can be driven again.

Sort by condition and body style. Top 10% (1%?) conserved and a drop-in EV conversion that fits to the stock mounts productized and mass produced. They could sell them as kits.

Destroying those vehicles is going to create far more pollution than it would be preventing and cost the tax payers millions of dollars.
Just stick some restriction on them so they can not be registered in a smog prone city.
Should have just taken the money from VW, stuffed the coffers with it and left the he vehicles alone.
It disgusting that the government would waste so much time, money and resources on this insignificant issue, given all the other problems we have.
Luckily the grown-ups are back in charge for the time being.
