The way I see it, everyone does something that annoys others. I don't like to smell flatulence, but people do it, and that's OK. I don't like to hear harleys, but people ride them and that's OK. I don't like to drive behind a slowass, but people do it, and that's OK.
Freedom for anyone means freedom for everyone and as long as they're not doing you tangible, physical harm or interrupting your food supply or your own freedom, we should all simply accept that we have to let others have their fun too. If NOBODY stepped on anyone's toes once in a while that would mean we all were locked in a cage, because at some point every single one of us annoys someone else with something we're doing, or something we're causing.

That is so true!!!
I agree though, Harley's don't need to be that loud. Just loud enough where I know where he is when I'm driving.

Aviation has had noise-cancelling headsets for over a decade. Much lighter and more effective than heavy sound-deadening material. You are beginning to see snoise-cancelling headsets on target ranges, where hearing loss is a real problem.
I don't think the technology is all that exotic these days.
Might be a real boon for diesels.
Might be a necessity in the beercans we might be driving in the future.

It is illegal to drive with earplugs, ear buds, or headphones on while driving a motor vehicle. Learned that in Driver's ed. Someone in my class argued over that fact, as well as arguing over using them for cell phone conversations.

The output isn't important what the output is - headphones or speakers - the technology is the same.

Thread revival:
More detailed article posted about the noise cancellation / MPG interaction, this time for the GMC Terrain crossover (badge sibling of the Equinox):
(Note: EPA-rated 32 mpg (US) highway )
Quote:
When GM engineers set out to deliver segment-leading fuel economy on Terrain they chose to lower the 6-speed transmission's gear shift points to enable the Ecotec 2.4L four-cylinder engine to run at lower rpm torque. In this "Eco" mode, which the driver can activate with a click of a button on the console, the torque converter clutch engages at lower engine speeds to help save gas. While the engineering action improved fuel efficiency by up to one mpg, it also created an objectionable low-end frequency boom. To counteract that boom the engineers turned to active noise cancellation technology.

Do you want something causing a low frequency boom on your car in return for 1 MPG ?
