Top 10 most fuel efficient gasoline powered cars of all time

Actually, we're only going back to 1984 because that is what the EPA ratings go back to. But, I went through the ratings and pulled out the top 10 most fuel efficient gasoline powered cars on the EPAs list. Not too surprising, but the Metro clones (Sprint, Swift, Metro, Firefly, Forsa) dominate the list with the Hondas nipping at their heels with their ever lovely lean burn technology.

Here they are:

1) 1986 Chevrolet Sprint ER

City: 44
Highway: 53
Combined: 48
Engine: 1.0L
Transmission: 5 speed manual

2) 1990 Geo Metro XFI

City: 43
Highway: 52
Combined: 47
Engine: 1.0L
Transmission: 5 speed manual

3) 1986 Honda CRX HF

City: 41
Highway: 51
Combined: 46
Engine: 1.5L
Transmission: 5 speed manual

4) 1988 Honda Civic CRX HF

City: 41
Highway: 49
Combined: 46
Engine: 1.5L
Transmission: 5 speed manual

5) 1994 Honda Hatchback Civic VX

City: 40
Highway: 47
Combined: 43
Engine: 1.5L
Transmission: 5 speed manual

6) 1985 Suzuki SA310

City: 39
Highway: 47
Combined: 42
Engine: 1.0L
Transmission: 5 speed manual

7) 1995 Geo Metro

City: 37
Highway: 44
Combined: 40
Engine: 1.0L
Transmission: 5 speed manual

8) 1988 Suzuki Forsa

City: 36
Highway: 44
Combined: 39
Engine: 1.0L
Transmission: 5 speed manual

9) 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage

City: 36
Highway: 42
Combined: 39
Engine: 1.2L
Transmission: CVT

10) 1992 Honda Civic

City: 35
Highway: 43
Combined: 38
Engine: 1.5L
Transmission: 5 speed manual

Not too far behind the Civic are the Scion iQ and Smart ForTwo... But, this is a top 10 list, not 12.

If I get enough likes, I'll probably do a hybrids, EV, trucks etc. list like this.

Do a Top 10 full-size V8 4x4 list. I hear somewhat frequent claims of 20+ and while I can personally attest to being able to achieve 20+ once in a blue moon, averaging it is another story.

And while I do believe aerocaps help on pickups, I'm very suspicious of claims of, oh, 23+mpg, for an average, not a one-time tank or trip.

That Suzuki 3-cyl is great for a 1-litre engine from the '80s.

Too much Suzukiclone in that list!!

If I could have any of those in mint condition, it'd be tough to decide between one of the CRX's or the VX. Best blend of frugal & fun to drive, with some style as a bonus.

Also! One of these things is not like the other!

The Mirage with CVT is the only automatic in the list. But in the real world, the Mirage CVT returns worse fuel economy than the 5-speed manual in the hands of anyone but an auto journalist / boy racer.

I'd love to see a list of the most fuel efficient convertibles/targa top cars.

Ha. True.

But at least there would only be one in that list!

Then, how would the rednecks tow their ghost trailers with a 1-litre 3-cyl?

But in spite of its simple design it was still quite an advanced engine for its time, compared to what the European automakers (and overseas branches of American ones) used to offer in the same timeframe.
