In normal daily driving, I decided to check the brake temperature. I was able to reach around the back and hold onto the brake discs. They were only lightly warm. If you're trying to "drive without brakes", it's not going to be any problem.

For long grades, as Neil said, downshift and engine brake.

Guys all this search for "moon" covers....they are called Moon because Mooneyes invented them and they are readily available even in custom sizes and in snap on or screw on varieties.

Try adding an "L" to the end of that link.

Also, we look for alternatives because those are $$$.

Hello, Concrete,
That is encouraging data on the wheel covers! I think I'll try that. My truck currently is getting about 18mpg hwy and I know I can improve it a lot, a little at a time.

Thanks....left it off because I was under 5 posts couldn't put up links.

The wheel covers are cheap...look again. Under $30 each and look great and fit right.

...unfortunately, their 16" moons are $50.50 each (not $30-something) and don't have any valve-stem access for checking tire air pressure (not good).

True...that is a good deal more $$. But as far as a valve stem hole, thats very easily remedied with a hole saw....or better yet install electronic air pressure monitoring that way you don't have to give away any aero advantage.

That still is a ton more money. We mostly look for cost-effective solutions.

Well there is a saying penny wise dollar foolish. Time is money, looking for a perfect solution when one is manufactured to perfection, sometimes its just worth it to buck up....and of course there is aesthetics...but that is just me.

I ended up using a set of nearly smooth plastic hubcaps. They give me 90% of the benefit of moons, and cost $25 for the set.
