It's a movie, so you don't know what shape the car was in afterwards, and how many trucks they went through.

Filming The Dukes of Hazzard, they went through 6 cars per episode, almost wiping out a generation of Chargers !

I'd stick that spare tire back on - it's only 50 pounds on a vehicle designed to handle between 10,000 and 13,000. I seriously doubt it's going to notice the spare tire. You're going to care a lot more about not having one if you get a flat than you're going to care about the very small fuel economy savings.

Also if your mom needs proof that an old F-150 isn't safe just because it's large... this is the 1997-2004 F-150 being crash tested at IIHS. It faired extremely poorly. I know, it's two years newer than yours. Compare that to the 2004 model that's 10 years newer in the next video.

Here's the newer 2004-2008 model being crash tested - the engine compartment is destroyed, but the dummy 'lives'.

Question - what's the code to embed the videos directly in the post?

Well after a long delay I have an update! I finally broke 18mpg! That was with my dad driving it for a day too so it would be slightly over 18 if he didnt drive that day. Ive got the Ecomodder bug again and cant wait to modify some things. I see now that MpGuinos are $35. I think I see one of them in the near future!

Other than take of the spare and add a small cb antenna, nothing! Its all down to my driving style. Ill get relaible readings when I get my mpguino. Putting 20 bucks worth of gas in a empty tank recording the gallons and driving till empty works but a mpguino would be much better. Especially since it has instant mpg

what type of drive train does the 2wd truck have?
is the 2wd truck a 4.9, 5.0, or 5.8L engine

2.73, 3.08, 3.27, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10 or 4.55 geared

the 2.73 ratio is only in 2wds. all others are made 2wd and 4wd.

the axil code on the drivers door will help find this out.
two numbers like 18 indicates a open diff, where one that's say F5 means the rear is a LSD diff.

in the early 90s there was i think two or three manual tranys.

and several different auto tranys as well.
in the mid to late 80s there's double that many tranys to pick from
1986 was the last year that ford sold the three on the tree manual trans

then there's sort bed and long, reg cab and extra cab, 2wd and 4wd.

need less to say all these differences, can have a staggering affect on MPG

No gas log entries that are any good- who knows what is going on with that thing. Been driving it 5x/week? How much spent on gas?
