Nothing exotic or surprising on my list. Most are named already, but I'll share my personal fav and a pic... its the early 80s CRX with the 1.3L... I remember being wowed by the (old) EPA rating of 51mpg highway. I was not yet old enough to drive but I thought that was the coolest:

BMW e28 525e

A 2.7 low revving version of the 12v m20 6pot.. gave 120bhp, and 40 imp MPG attached to an autobox.. The engine, if mated to a better flowing head and manual box gives 180bhp, and max torque from abvout 1500-6000rpm-very linear! whilst still retaining 40mpg, Spirited driving yields 30-33mpg

Wow, did I never click to post my post I typed up? That's not cool. I wrote it all up, had pics and everything - now it's all gone! Here it goes again:

1. GM EV-1. Duh.



2. Honda Insight (classic), Citrus Yellow Metallic. Stick, of couse.



3. Honda CR-Z, North Shore Blue. Again, Stick.



4. Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG e-Cell. I'd drive it reasonably...most of the time.



5. 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid (stick). 04, because they can still be calpod modded! They're so cute, and such sleeper hybrids!
