I did a 380 miles round trip in the Leaf a few weeks ago. The was a lot of wind, up to 50mph gusts according to the weather report. The trip went ok. A down charging station in Parachute had us barely making it to our destination. Fortunately there's a charging station about every 15 miles between Grand Junction and Rifle otherwise. The worse parts of the trip might have been better with better planning. I found out that the shopping mall in GJ is closed after 6:00pm on Sundays and that it's a bad I idea to charge close to the mall with your wife after the mall is closed. Also if I had spent a night in Montrose instead of trying to climb up into Gunnison at midnight in freezing weather that would have been a bit more prudent.

As far as renting goes I'm renting my second rental today. However I see a monkey wrench getting thrown into this. Hertz, where I got a membership and get a AAA discount, is now only open from 9:00 to noon five days a week. Sunday and Monday it's closed. At least Avis and Budget are open until 1:00 seven days a week. I think in the future I'm going to try to trade cars with friends or family members and offer them the rental money, or at least part of it. I wonder if there's some sort of insurance I can get that covers other people's cars.

An interesting thing happened today. While I was walking to the car rental a friend saw me and offered to give me a ride. When I told him why I was going to the airport he said that he'd offer me his car to take to Denver this weekend, no problem! Then something weird happened. There was an error with my reservation (my mistake apparently, but not charged for it) and I'd have to make a new reservation. So I said I had other plans and instead called my friend up and offered him the rental money. He insisted that I just borrow his car without paying him, that all he would need is an oil change. So I took it in to get an oil change and will be going to Denver in it with 5 other people.

A local guy drove his home 1,100 miles, he managed in 50 hours, but he slept in the car and was always moving or charging. I believe he made 15 charging stops.

I charged 18 times after the inicial charge at home. But some of that wasn't completely necessary.

No homes. But everything from spending the night at campgrounds using the 120V 20/15amp RV outlets to Level 2 6.6kW stations to DC fast charge CHAdeMO stations. I didn't have access to a place to charge where I stayed so I used a free nearby CHAdeMO station both in the morning and the afternoon, charging from about 50% to 80% so as not to overheat the battery.

Still so much extra time and work to make an electric trip happen. 350 miles each way? is such an easy day in a ice car or on a motorcycle.
