let me try reason one more time:

According to my legal council, if you hit someone with your vehicle you are responsible for damages and their medical bills.

If they have complications because of diabetes or ??? after the accident, it doesn't matter. You are responsible.

If they were driving an outrageously priced Lamborghini, or even just a lexus, it doesn't matter. You are accountable for the repair/replacement of that vehicle.

If the concern is money, making the helmet insurance law thing would be a mere pittance, and sets the stage for blaming the victim. But it is one of those safety things that shuts down everyones logic circuits (and enables a few lactation circuits).

You would save a lot more money if people didn't have to repair other peoples flashy cars when they got a scratch. Note, that only liability insurance is required by law, full coverage is completely optional if you own the vehicle.

Should the government make full coverage mandatory so I don't have to pay you when I hit your $30,000 car?

i always wear a helmet myself, but i can remember when everyone had these same thoughts when they made seat belts mandatory. now nobody really thinks about it anymore.

You are absolutely correct! The reason why liability insurance rates have traditionally been lower for motorcycles than for cars is that it's harder to do as much damage with a motorcycle as you might with a car.

And besides, in such severe accidents the motorcyclist usually ends up DEAD.
