Fiat 500 dirty butt

One of the small problems with the Fiat 500, is the fact that everything sticks to the back window.

When you drive it, the turbulence behind really leaves it filthy. If you watch in the rear view mirror you can see the leaves dancing on the back window. Add a little rain, and the leaves are stuck to the back window. Very irritating.

The factory spoilers on the Sports and Abarths have the same problem.

My question is: If I put an air deflector on the roof to direct the air down the back window would it help or hurt the FE? Or would a spoiler right under the rear window be better?

The stock one looks ideal. If you're talking about one of these:

Then yes, it will decrease your MPG.

The very end of my boat tail always gets filthy; I just learn to live with it.

Now, we usually don't suggest these, but I wonder if vortex generators on the trailing edge of the roof would energize the wake enough to keep the air from "sticking" to your window. They would likely decrease your MPG too (since the energy has to come from somewhere) but perhaps a 1mpg hit or so would be worth the extra safety/visibility.

There are some spoilers that might help to manage this issue without prejudices to the fuel-efficiency.

Look how smooth and integrated it is.

spoiler

I would be inclined to project a shelf straight back from the base of the backlight, even with the trailing edge of the bumper. It might be enough to sequester the airborne material below it.

Was gonna say the same thing about a partial Kamm. At least on the Sides, for better flow seperation. Note the new Ford Escape has little ridges along the very outside edge of its rear window to create better seperation. All of them in my area the rear window looks clear as rain as dirty as the bodies were...

Wouldn't be easier to just buy a ready-to-use one?

Haven't found any for the Fiat 500 yet.
I decided to build a temp spoiler for under the rear window from 5/8 inch foam. I'm trying for a two-fold fix here. Keeping the rear window clean and an economy mod.
