First time over 50mpg

Take a look at my fuel logs. I have driven my venerable 86 VW diesel for about 8000 miles now. This week I got 50 mpg for the first time. This month I've worked with an 2x4' election sign that I have been fairly hording since Nov.

75% of my miles are on 4 lane, packed to the gills. I do drive gravel roads for about 20 miles each tank. The rest are 5-15 mile commuting runs.

I haven't had many motorcycles that would get 50mpg and none that would carry any real load. I am well pleased with this car that is older than many on this list.

I have purchased sheets of coroplast in the past and know a guy in central Illinois that sells sheets of it. I just never get over that way. I can imagine driving my big van on a road trip to save 1 cent a mile.

Congrats Varn!

I'm using the Mk 2 Jetta also, though mine's a gasser. I'm catching up to your numbers, slowly. What are you planning for aero mods? What have you done already? Sorry, but I've been reading ALOT and don't always look at who-posted-what.

The last owner of my poor little oil burner destroyed the hub, stripping out the threads for the lug. Been down all winter. Nice to know these are capible of 50mpg, I only got ~40 out of it when I was driving it this winter. (NO EOC) I am thinking of selling it because the gas civic did just about as good on fuel 30 cents cheaper. We will see how it does this summer once I get it rolling again.

Congratulations! I may join you soon, I have been adjusting the nut behind the wheel a bit more effectively, and gained 2 mpg to nearly 47 starting at half tank.

Perhaps it is the hot weather.

Since I last filled I did 428 miles and put in 7.9 gallons ($29). 54 mpg. I have kept the cruise speed to 52-53 (only because my Econoline gets it best mpg there.) I did do a 2 minute blast at full throttle and several low mileage runs.

It is the best ever for me. I worry about melting my snow tires. Perhaps I will need new by winter.

I have a GPS so I know my miles are pretty accurate.

I may have 9000 miles on my $2000 dollar car. It is paid for.

Congrats! If you are at highway speeds often, you might get real benefits out of further aero mods beyond your grill block. Mirror delete? Airdam? Undertray?
